Post Doc Position: Virtual Training to Manage Animal Welfare Risk for Turkey Producers and Processors
We are seeking a highly motivated full-time post doc candidate starting in August 2023 to work with Dr. Allison Pullin in the Prestage Department of Poultry Science, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Dr. Monique Pairis-Garcia in the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology, College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University.
Educational resources to train turkey growers and catching crews on humane handling is lacking. Key challenges to disseminating resources include scheduling in-person workshops and content language barriers for non-English speakers.
We aim to address this issue by:
Utilizing focus groups to identify challenges with implementing appropriate handling techniques
Developing an innovative, virtual, on-demand education program to train individuals on humane handling of market-ready turkeys. The tool can be implemented across all turkey enterprises for onboarding and annual training requirements. Material will be available in English and Spanish.
Atrain the trainer program will be developed and implemented within companies to ensure future workforce are trained on humane handling techniques.
The post doc will be primarily be responsible for developing evidence-based case studies for the training modules, recording supporting video and photo content, collecting and analyzing data from focus groups, and disseminating the tool to producers.
- PhD in animal science, poultry science, or equivalent; or DVM
- Experience with poultry production (preferably turkeys)
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Able to work independently as well as part of a team
- Willingness to travel for farm visits
- Experience with communicating research findings
- Spanish language skills preferred but not required
