Poultry Research Assistant

Job Summary

At this time, this position is accepting applications and actively recruiting. The Research Assistant will work in the Animal Sciences Department to support daily aspects of the poultry research program. This would entail oversite of research in the lab, including providing guidance to undergraduate research assistants, collecting data, processing data, maintaining laboratory equipment, and promoting a positive lab culture. Additional duties will include but are not limited to:



  • Overseeing and coordinating research conducted and laboratory/ field operations in order to meet national standards and maintain and/or continue grant funding

  • Performing experimental tests and assays and recording and analyzing results in order to provide conclusive data for research projects

  • Performing all field work in order to run experiments

  • Establishing and implementing quality control procedures and ensuring compliance with federal guidelines

  • Assisting in the design and implementation of Filemaker databases including managing the server and keeping all computers up to date and running

  • Designing, building, calibrating, testing and operating laboratory instruments in order to ensure compliance with specifications and to meet project needs

  • Overseeing/training and scheduling undergraduate students for research projects

  • Planning research methodology and developing, adapting and writing protocols in order to design research experiments that contribute to meeting project goals

  • Maintaining materials, methods and records of experimental procedures and evaluations of data accumulated

  • Researching current literature in order to determine the most economical, efficient and productive research methods

  • Keeping up to date with current assays and research assays and methodologies; contacting vendors for additional information

  • Managing laboratory budgets

  • Assisting with registration of participants for events as well as assisting in duplication of materials and activities

  • Assisting in preparing and editing reports, articles and manuscripts for publication; participating in presentations

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Animal Science or related field

  • Related Research experience

  • Work with animal biologic materials

  • able to make minor changes to experimental procedures to achieve robust data, and communicate ideas and methods for improving and addressing problems

  • Ability to multitask and be flexible in order to accomplish daily tasks

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

  • Ability to perform routine and complex animal and biological study procedures

  • Ability to work independently in large and complex animal studies from beginning to the end of a study and be responsible for data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting to lab clients and PIs

  • Good oral/written communication skills

  • High level of commitment to professionalism, ethics, and integrity

  • Conscientious, self-motivated, responsive, and outstanding attention to detail

  • Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and others)

  • Ability to lift and carry 25-50 pounds frequently and 60 pounds occasionally

Preferred:

  • Master's degree

  • Basic knowledge and experience with poultry
