Masters of Science in Poultry Science

The Department of Poultry Science at Mississippi State University is seeking a highly motivated graduate research assistant who is interested in poultry microbiology beginning in the summer semester of 2019. The research will focus on identifying the prevalence, virulence factors, and antibiotic resistance of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) in broiler chicken. The selected candidate will be working in a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) laboratory and will be responsible for:
- Developing research protocols
- Conducting field trips (commercial poultry farms) for sample collection
- Performing laboratory microbiological analysis (Basic and molecular)
- Performing data analysis using statistical software such as SAS
- Preparing scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
- Preparing posters and oral presentations for scientific conferences
- Assisting in other research projects and departmental activities
Qualifications:
ï‚· B. S. in Poultry Science, Animal Science, microbiology, or a closely related field
ï‚· Enthusiasm for conducting research on farm as well as in the lab
ï‚· Prior microbiology research experience preferred but not mandatory
ï‚· Previous working experience in a BSL 2 facility is preferred but not mandatory
ï‚· Strong oral and written communication skills
Salary and Stipend: The stipend is $13,000/year plus tuition remission and health insurance
